Have you ever walked out of a movie having your mind blown? Like you can’t stop replaying the best moments from the film, trying to grasp what happened? You’re not alone.

The Matrix

It seems cliche to say there was nothing like The Matrix before it was released, but that’s the truth. The 1999 film was a breakthrough for action sequences and special effects that changed how movies were made.

The film’s CGI, story, and fight scenes hold up well today.

Dark City

If it weren’t for The Matrix, then maybe 1998’s Dark City would get the recognition it deserves. The neo-noir sci-fi flick oozes originality and style, giving moviegoers a taste of the future of the movie medium.

Another response that’s possibly cliche, but it’s cliche for a reason! Based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk, the film follows a character known as The Narrator, who struggles with insomnia, as his life changes after meeting Tyler Durden.

12 Monkeys

From one Brad Pitt film to another. Directed by Terry Gilliam, the post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller is filled with twists and turns that keep you guessing to the very end. Pitt was nominated for an Academy Award and won a Golden Globe for his performance.

Memento

Before Christopher Nolan became a household name, the 2000 film Memento was a breakout hit for the filmmaker. The movie’s usage of a non-linear narrative results in a genuine mind-blown moment when everything fits together perfectly.

That’s not the only time Nolan blew our minds. His thriller featuring two dueling magicians features one of the best endings in movie history. It’s still shocking, even on subsequent viewings.

Hot Fuzz

Despite being a comedy, Hot Fuzz features plenty of action and suspense alongside the laughs.

Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg’s script is a perfect balance of entertainment and humor, complete with an incredible twist ending.

Thank goodness this movie came out before the era of social media because spoilers would have been everywhere.

M. Night Shyamalan’s debut film blew audiences away with its iconic ending. Sadly, the director’s promising career would result in subsequent movies being uneven in quality.

Shutter Island

Following the success of The Departed, Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese collaborated on another classic, albeit one that didn’t meet the same mainstream success.

Despite that, Shutter Island’s ending blew the minds of moviegoers upon release and is worth your time to check it out today.

Saw

Before the franchise became filled with bloated annual sequels, the 2004 debut film was an incredible achievement. Yes, it’s always heavily leaned into the torture devices, but the twists and turns of the plot’s unique premise hooked viewers.

We’re still thinking about that ending even two decades later.
