The upcoming Battlefield game will arrive on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles this winter. The news comes after previous information suggested developers DICE would skip older consoles.
EA CEO Andrew Wilson confirmed the news, in an earnings call with investors. In a blog post from April, DICE General Manager Oskar Gabrielson said the game would harness “the power of next-gen consoles and PCs.” This omission of previous-gen consoles led to fan speculation that the upcoming game wouldn’t release older hardware. However, this announcement puts those concerns to bed and ensures that fans who are yet to upgrade can still play the game.
While its official announcement is due in June, we already know plenty about the upcoming Battlefield game. Gabrielson confirmed last month that the game will increase lobby sizes to more than the 64 players allowed in Battlefield V. Similarly, he mentioned “game-changing destruction,” hinting at a return of Battlefield 4’s Levolution mechanic. This allowed maps to be dynamically changed mid-game – notably, with a skyscraper tumbling down during a battle. The wait for more information is nearly over, as days ago, the official Battlefield Twitter account teased a June reveal.
That said, leakers have unveiled more information about Battlefield 6. Screenshots verified by known leaker Tom Henderson show a near-future setting, with the series’ classic vehicle-based combat returning. They also show an island surrounded by sea with a storm incoming – likely teasing a multiplayer map. Other leaks have confirmed the game takes place in the 2030s, where Russia and America are the only global superpowers left. The campaign will follow soldiers from other nations as they choose which side to join.
With just a matter of weeks until its reveal, Battlefield 6 is shaping up to bring the franchise to the next generation. The news that older consoles will support it will help ensure the player base is strong – and perhaps means cross-platform gameplay may be supported. Until more official information, we at least know Battlefield 6 will be accessible to all fans, no matter their console generation.
