Three Classic Bethesda Games Are Currently Free On Steam

Bethesda Softworks has released countless high-quality games over the years. Now, you can get your hands on several of them free of charge. On April 26, 2022, two classic Elder Scrolls games and one Wolfenstein game became free on Steam. The free games include The Elder Scrolls: Arena, The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, and Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. They may be decades old, but they helped start two of the most popular and prolific video game series still being played today.

Bethesda’s Free Games

Like Epic Games and Blizzard, Bethesda Softworks made its own attempt to have a platform that exclusively carried their titles. People were able to download a launcher that took them directly to the Bethesda.net catalog. It was first launched in 2016, but is now scheduled to shut down this year on May 11. As a response to this decision, Bethesda Softworks released three of their oldest titles to Steam entirely for free.

The Elder Scrolls: Arena and The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall were also previously available through Bethesda.net and GOG. Even though it’s still uncertain how long these older titles will remain on the platform, Bethesda has frequently released many other entries to both series on Steam. This includes the still widely played The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and the co-op game Wolfenstein: Young Blood. There are also plans to continue both with Elder Scrolls VI having been discussed as well as Wolfenstein 3.

The free titles go back to the earliest days of Elder Scrolls and the mid-days of Wolfenstein. The Elder Scrolls: Arena is the very first entry in the series, having been released in 1994. This was followed soon after by The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall in 1996. In contrast, by the time Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory came out in 2003, the series was already five games in. Though these games still carry the clunkiness of old PC graphics and controls, it won’t cost you anything to see just how far each series has come.
