In the gaming world, the actors who provided character voices can sometimes become celebrities in their own right. And few voice actors are more prominent than Troy Baker. The Dallas-based actor has portrayed Joel Miller in the Last of Us, the Joker in Batman: Arkham Origins, Pagan Min in Far Cry, and many others.

Now Miller is looking to parlay that notoriety into financial gain by selling NFT’s of his voice. The actor wrote on his Twitter feed on Friday, “I’m partnering with VoiceVerse NFT to explore ways where together we might bring new tools to new creators to make new things, and allow everyone a chance to own & invest in the IP’s they create. We all have a story to tell. You can hate. Or you can create. What’ll it be?”

The reaction to the message was overwhelmingly negative. A user named Tucker’s Birthday is Today, If Ya Didn’t Know, responded, “dude, there are literally people freezing in New York right now because blockchains used up so much power that it raised their energy bills, and now people can’t afford to pay for heat. There is no artistic value in this, its just money and scams with the facade of art.”

Another user, who goes by Mango She/Her, replied, “troy, this isnt just an ‘i hate NFTs for the sake of having sth to hate’ thing, NFTs have such huge consequences. ‘you can hate or you can create’ is so petty and such a middle finger to all the artists who have already been affected negatively by NFTs. you’re better than this.”

Baker responded to the loud opposition voices hours after his initial tweet. He wrote, “I always want to be a part of the conversation, even if sometimes that finds me in the midst of a loud one. Appreciate y’all sharing your thoughts and giving me a lot to think about. I’m just a storyteller out here trying to tell my story to whomever will hear.”
