Some ends stick with us, but not for good. An online community votes these on-screen experiences to be some of the worst endings in cinematic and television history. Read with caution: spoilers ahead!

1. ALF (1986 – 1990)

The show ended with the hero getting captured by the government. While many expected the finale to be a two-part episode where he got rescued, the show ended before that. Hence, the series ended with ALF being taken away by government scientists, presumably to be dissected.

2. Game of Thrones (2011-2019)

“Ruined any chance of a rewatch for me,” comments one viewer. The beloved show based on George R. R. Martin’s series ended unfulfilling, disappointing many committed viewers. One commenter was simply happy that Jon Snow was still alive by the end of it. However, the lack of happy endings for characters except Sansa and Arya left many unsatisfied.

3. Lucy (2014)

Scarlett Johansson’s character in this film gets so powerful that she sees the Big Bang while narrowly escaping assassins and dodging bullets. Ultimately, she enters the space-time continuum, leaving her body and alerting everyone else via text that she’s still around. I mean, that’s all well and good, but a film’s bad when its main character vanishes.

4. Dexter (2006 – 2013)

Imagine having two opportunities to correct the course of the show and still failing. That’s the case of Dexter, where the creators had two finales and still missed it. Many critique the series for leaving unanswered questions about Dexter’s exposé, not to mention the forced lumberjack narrative despite Dexter’s insistence that he couldn’t get rid of his Dark Passenger.

5. Supernatural (2005 – 2020)

“If every event over the 15 seasons never happened, the two main characters would’ve died the same way they did in the finale,” observes one fan. It’s upsetting that 15 years of character development doesn’t matter, and the show’s fate is unchanged despite all the build-up. “I could write an essay on the number of problems I had with that ending.”

6. Now You See Me (2013)

Now You See Me focuses on four talented illusionists who compel others to believe in magic. However, the end was full of new revelations that had insufficient context. In addition to the four magicians, even the antagonist chasing them turns out to be an illusion. Then, the whole group gets on a carousel and disappears for some odd reason.

7. Pretty Little Liars (2010)

This famous American mystery drama hooked audiences for seven seasons only to reach a disappointing end. “Like everyone knows, Aria should’ve been A. Or the producers could’ve made all of the parents A, now that would’ve been fun,” comments a viewer. It’s not fun when the villain turns out to be a character that audiences were only briefly introduced to.

8. Money Heist (2017-2021)

This show was loved by many due to its uncertainty and plot twists. Hence, fans were disappointed when the show ended with a happily-ever-after stereotype. When everything in a show is highly at stake, audiences expect the same for its conclusion.

9. Knock at the Cabin (2023)

Some endings get critiqued for going overboard, while others get scrutinized for being underwhelming. Despite having beloved celebrities such as M. Night Shyamalan and Ruper Grint on board, the movie’s dull end left audiences unsatisfied. “The ending was boring, and nothing really cool happened,” says a viewer.

10. Scrubs (2001-2009)

This was an incredible show until the original cast was wholly replaced with new characters in its final season. Hence, viewers were disappointed when all their attachment to the previous characters didn’t seem to have any meaning.

11. Sherlock (2010-2017)

The last season and the finale itself left many viewers disappointed. Many hoped to see a stronger connection between John and Sherlock but were only met with a shifting focus as a new character emerged. The relationship between Sherlock and Dr. Watson was why many loved the show, and seeing it all come down to loose ends was dissatisfying.

12. War of the Worlds (2005)

Imagine viewing humans desperately fighting aliens for ages only to discover that the invading species was allergic to Earth all along. The second the aliens leave their ships, they die due to earthly bacteria. Audiences are left with the idea that all the chaos and destruction was for nothing.
