Upcoming Skate Game Will Be Free-To-Play

EA struck comedy and entertainment gold with the Skate series. However, its upcoming entry is going to reach new audiences for a different reason. That’s because the new Skate game will be released as a free-to-play title. This marks the first entry in the series to not only drop its price tag, but to be entirely free. Considering how many players these titles have clocked in the past, this decision will cause players to flock.

A Free-To-Play Skate Game

The original series release, simply titled Skate, released in 2007. With wild physics and freedom of movement, the series immediately took off with two sequels closely following. It’s been a while since then, but now it looks like Skate 4 is making some big moves and announcements. Aiming to be another online entry, this new game will be launching as a free-to-play title. This model has become more popular as of late, particularly when it comes to garnering players. Of course, they’re free to jump into, but eventually charge money for additional content and vanity items. We don’t know if the new release will follow suit, but it’s highly likely.

Ever since Tony Hawk became the face of skateboarding, the sport has spread to gaming but Skate managed to set itself apart. Although players are able to play through a story following a renegade skateboarder and their chums, the main appeal came from sandbox. The skateboarder could be customized to look ridiculous as they tear their way through Random Coastal City, USA as they avoid pedestrians, vehicles, and other skateboarders. With new games came more modes, online capabilities, and user-created content with hopes that the tradition will continue.

It’s been over 10 years since the last big Skate game launched, but EA is really taking Skate 4 seriously. Having recently released gameplay footage, and pre-pre-alpha testing, the decision to make this entry free-to-play will add some more coal to the already speeding hype train boiler.
