With HBO’s The Last of Us breaking records, it feels like we’re about to enter a golden age for video game adaptations.
With video game adaptations finally succeeding, we look at 20 games currently in development to be brought to the movie or television screen.
Alan Wake
AMC purchased the rights for an Alan Wake series in May 2022.
Additionally, a sequel to the 2010 Alan Wake game, released on Xbox 360 and PC, is also in development.
Twisted Metal
A series based on the popular PlayStation vehicular destruction series will air on Peacock in 2023.
It stars Anthony Mackie, Stephanie Beatriz, Thomas Haden Church, Samoa Joe, Will Arnett, and Richard Cabral.
Fallout
Amazon has a Fallout TV series currently in production.
It is developed by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, best known for their work on the HBO series Westworld. Walton Goggins, Ella Purnell, and Kyle MacLachlan are set to star.
God of War
Amazon is also developing a show based on the popular PlayStation game God of War.
Rafe Judkins, who helms the Wheel of Time series, will be the showrunner.
BioShock
An adaptation of BioShock has been in the works for over a decade. Currently, Netflix owns the rights.
Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence is set to direct, and Michael Green, best known for Logan and Blade Runner 2048, is writing the script.
Mass Effect
Amazon is busy when it comes to video game adaptations. In addition to the games already mentioned, they also own the rights to Mass Effect.
Sadly, not much is known about a Mass Effect TV series at this time.
Borderlands
When it comes to Borderlands, Lionsgate is going down the movie route. Directed by Eli Roth and written by Roth and Craig Mazin, the Borderlands movie has an ensemble cast.
It stars Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Jamie Lee Curtis.
Ghost of Tsushima
Despite confirmation of a Ghost of Tsushima movie, there hasn’t been much in terms of announcements.
John Wick 4 Director Chad Stahelski is helming the project and says a script already exists.
Horizon Zero Dawn
A series based on Horizon Zero Dawn is coming to Netflix.
Steve Blackman, best known for his work as the showrunner for The Umbrella Academy, is helming the Horizon series.
Death Stranding
Death Stranding is getting a sequel and a movie adaptation.
The film is a joint production between Kojima Productions and Hammerstone Studios. It is unknown if the game’s cast will reprise their roles in the movie.
Warhammer 40,000
After exiting The Witcher TV series, Henry Cavil is set to star and serve as Executive Producer for a Warhammer 40K series.
Amazon currently holds the rights to a Warhammer series.
Assassin’s Creed
We’ve already seen an Assassin’s Creed movie. Netflix is currently working on adapting a television series based on the popular gaming franchise by Ubisoft.
Little is known about the Assassin’s Creed Netflix series at this time. Other than its announcement, it’s been radio silence.
Portal
A movie from the popular FPS puzzle game is being produced by none other than J.J. Abrams.
As of 2021, the movie is in active development, and a script is being written at Warner Bros.
Gran Turismo
Neill Blomkamp is directing the theatrical adaptation of the Gran Turismo video game franchise.
The film will release on August 11th, 2023, and stars Archie Madekwe, David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, and Djimon Hounsou.
Far Cry
Not to be confused with the 2008 box-office bomb from Uwe Boll, a Far Cry movie has been in development for a decade. But, sadly, nothing has come of it.
Additionally, an animated Netflix series Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix is currently in production.
Splinter Cell
Netflix is working on an anime series adaptation of the Splinter Cell series.
Derek Kolstad, writer for John Wick, will serve as executive Producer for the show.
Silent Hill
The Silent Hill franchise is returning to the big screen.
Christophe Gans and Victor Hadida, who worked on the original 2006 film, are developing a new movie with Konami: Return to Silent Hill.
Ark Survival Evolved
It’s a good time to be an Ark Survival Evolved fan.
In addition to a new game coming out, a movie with Vin Deisel is in the works. Don’t expect it to hit theaters until after the game is released, though.
System Shock
Greg Russo, who worked on the recent Mortal Kombat movie, is writing and directing the System Shock film.
The movie is based on the cult classic video game that’s currently being remade.
Super Mario Bros.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie from Illumination is set to hit theaters on April 5th.
It stars Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, and Seth Rogen.
