Gamers always love a good challenge, but some video games take it to another level. Sometimes, people get frustrated during specific boss battles. Every now and then, gamers may lose their cool and rage quit.
From brutally difficult old-school games to specific moments that make us pull our hair out, here are the games that made us rage quit, according to Reddit.
Castlevania
The Castlevania series features some of the best video games ever made. That doesn’t mean they’re a walk in the park, though.
Old-school Nintendo games have a reputation for being brutally hard. The original Castlevania games are no exception. They were nicknamed “controller busters” for a reason.
Overcooked
Overcooked isn’t a fun co-op game if you work in the restaurant industry. Instead, it’s just another work shift.
Working in a kitchen is already a stressful environment. Overcooked can, for better or worse, capture that essence perfectly. You’ll need to work in harmony with your teammates. If you can’t do this, you’ll grow to hate even your closest friends.
Guitar Hero
There’s a level of skill required to become a master at Guitar Hero.
No matter how proficient you are, though, there will always be a song that becomes your nemesis. Whether it’s Raining Blood or any song that requires your small hands to hit the orange button, make sure you don’t break your plastic guitar.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Looking back, the most challenging moments of Sonic 3 all seem so simple.
One stage, in particular, made most gamers rage, myself included: The Carnival Night barrels. The time I spent jumping on them only to run out of time on the stage is too dang high.
Then I learned how to deal with them properly, and I wanted to scream in frustration. So many hours of my life were wasted.
Ghosts ‘N Goblins
Sometimes you wonder if a console game is just an arcade game in disguise. Ghosts ‘N Goblins is one of those games.
Its brutal difficulty feels designed to repeatedly force players to pump quarters to gain extra lives. But, of course, home console games don’t operate that way. Instead, players are often urged to throw their controllers through a window.
Super Mario Sunshine
The Super Mario Bros. games are, for the most part, an absolute delight.
Super Mario Sunshine was released on the Nintendo GameCube. After release, it’s become a cult classic. Yet there’s one part of the game everyone points to as the most rage-inducing: the secret levels. For some, even hearing the stage music brings back painful memories.
Cuphead
The gameplay loop of Cuphead is designed to test our patience.
Boss battles range from hard to seemingly impossible. The worst part is that everyone expected the game to be challenging. We were prepared, and its boss battles still kicked our butts.
Rocket League
No matter how much you play Rocket League, there’s no guarantee you’ll be any good at it.
In addition to its over-the-top concept of playing soccer with rocket-powered cars, you also have to deal with teammates. Unfortunately, according to the laws of averages, your teammates aren’t good at the game, either.
While Rocket League is plenty of fun, it’s also doubly frustrating to the point where my wife has woken me up screaming at the TV on many occasions.
League of Legends
Like Rocket League, League of Legends is a team-oriented game. As a result, you can do nothing about someone who isn’t pulling their weight.
Couple that with the fact that some games will feature your team running into an opposing team that’s infinitely better, and you’ll want to snap your headset in frustration.
Mario Kart
Playing Mario Kart online is the definition of a video game that causes severe rage.
You can pull off a perfect race, only to be hit with a blue shell, then repeated red shells, and fall to 9th place. Just thinking about it makes me want to scream.
World of Warcraft Classic
A key feature in World of Warcraft Classic was obtaining world buffs. These are temporary power-ups that make your character stronger. However, they aren’t permanent. If you die, you’ll lose these buffs forever.
Players would travel and acquire these world buffs before safely logging out of the game. However, some griefers would do what they could to remove the buffs, whether through abilities or killing players.
Putting in all that work for it to become meaningless literally made people quit the game. People hated the world buff meta.
Crash Bandicoot
Before their work on Uncharted and The Last of Us, Naughty Dog was known for the Crash Bandicoot franchise.
The platformer was known for its beautiful style, presentation, and difficulty, which made us want to smash a PlayStation 2 with a hammer. Even the most recent Crash Bandicoot game, Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, is brutally difficult to the point of causing players to rage quit.
Among Us
Innersloth
The hidden identity game relies so much on cooperation. That’s why it is frustrating when players tell the truth and get ignored.
“Red is clearly the imposter,” you’ll say while the rest of the crew ignores you.
“Don’t kill me; Red is the imposter,” will be your final words.
Several minutes later, Red, the imposter, wins the game. You turn off your computer, cover your mouth with a pillow, and scream as loud as possible.
Anything by FromSoftware
Whether we’re talking Dark Souls or Elden Ring, FromSoftware has a penchant for developing video games that make you want to rage.
Enemies of all sizes are capable of killing players out of nowhere. Bosses can routinely take dozens and dozens, if not hundreds, of attempts to defeat (if you’re lucky).
These are unforgettable video games, but they also want to make you throw your controller in the trash.
