Will Overwatch 2 Be Xbox Exclusive?

Following the colossal news that Microsoft is set to buy Activision Blizzard, the future of its tentpole franchises is up in the air. Considering Activision own series like Call of Duty and Crash Bandicoot, fans are wondering if they’ll soon become Xbox exclusive. Another title that may fall under that bracket is Overwatch 2, the much-anticipated sequel to Blizzard’s 2016 FPS. Will that game be an Xbox exclusive? We’ve got the lowdown.

Will Overwatch 2 Be An Xbox Exclusive?

Will Overwatch 2 Be An Xbox Exclusive?

At the moment, there is no definitive answer as to whether Overwatch 2 will be Xbox exclusive or not. If we had to guess, though, don’t be surprised if PlayStation players cannot play the upcoming FPS.

Of course, nothing is official or confirmed yet. Overwatch 2 could well land on PlayStation consoles when it eventually releases. However, it seems like Microsoft may want to save this as an Xbox exclusive title, especially if other Activision games remain cross-platform. Given the history of franchises like Crash Bandicoot and Call of Duty, which are closely tied to Sony, it may not want to jeopardize those sales figures. With Overwatch, however, there’s less immediate loyalty to PlayStation.

Equally, Microsoft may want to capitalize on the astounding success of last year’s Halo Infinite. That style of futuristic FPS action definitely struck a chord with audiences. If the company wants a first-party exclusive to keep that momentum going, Overwatch 2 could certainly fit that category.

However, a lot of this depends on how long it takes for the deal to get approval. These legal procedures can take months and even years. Overwatch 2 should release in 2023, so its exclusivity depends on whether the buyout is complete by then. With a move this big, though, you can bet that Microsoft will confirm which platforms Overwatch 2 will play on once the promotional campaign begins.
