Some brilliant gamers created their own mini-map for New World

There is so much that goes into building a game, and sometimes, makers can forget about the little things. And gamers, being creatures of habit, are always quick to point these mistakes out.

Users were very eager to play Amazon Studio’s New World, which was released in late September. Upon getting to try the game, though, many players were dismayed about the lack of a minimap. Instead, users need to rely on a compass. There is a map, but it does not appear at all times and needs to be opened and closed.

Rather than complaining about the gameplay, however, some enterprising gamers decided to take the matter into their own hands and create a mini-map that is on screen at all times.

Reddit user Morbid explained, “I teamed up with my friend to build a mini-map to help improve on the map interface, stop us getting lost in towns and make it a bit more efficient to farm resources while out questing.”

Morbid listed the highlights of his invention:

  • Auto zoom-in when you enter a city – honestly the main map should have this
  • Quickly show/hide the map with hotkeys – so it won’t distract you when its not needed
  • Custom developed OCR tech – we weren’t happy with the accuracy of the available methods so we designed our own just for this
  • Runs on Overwolf – As far as I know, Overwolf is EAC whitelisted and as this is the only process that runs, it is unlikely to get you banned
  • Community sourced data – Contains map data used with permission from newworld-map.com

The map can be downloaded here. Check out a video below:
