BioShock 4 Setting, Time Period Leaked to be 1960s Antartica

BioShock 4 may be ready for its debut in the limelight. According to both VGC and Colin Moriarty, we have our first details for the upcoming sequel.

Developed by Cloud Chamber and published by 2K Games, BioShock 4 [tenative title] will take place in a 1960s fictional city in Antarctica.

Per Moriarity, the city will be called Borealis. “I’ve been told that the development team has incredible latitude to get it right. That seems and sounds right to me,” he said during an episode of his Sacred Symbols podcast.

The newest entry in the BioShock franchise was announced in 2019. 2K Games announced the creation of Cloud Chamber as a studio, headed by Kelley Gilmore, formerly of Firaxis Games.

Several members of the new studio were part of the original BioShock development team. Ken Levine, however, is not part of the project, as he’s busy with his own project and team at Ghost Story Games.

VGC also reported earlier this year that based on job openings at Cloud Chamber, BioShock 4 is expected to be an open-world game.

The original BioShock was released back in 2007 to critical and fan acclaim as one of the best games of its generation. The franchise enjoyed further success with BioShock 2, featuring a return to the underwater city of Rapture from the original. BioShock Infinite took the series to new heights with Columbia, the city in the clouds. All three games were tied together through a narrative and, per VGC, BioShock 4 is expected to also fit within the franchise as well.

There have been whispers and reports of a full reveal at Thursday’s The Game Awards show, but don’t hold your breath if that’s not the case. We’ll keep an eye out for it on Thursday night, but we also won’t get our hopes up.

If we don’t see news on the next BioShock this week, expect it to come soon as the game has a planned 2022 release.
