Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy comics and movie franchise is getting the video-game treatment. At today’s Square Enix E3 conference, Eidos Montreal announced the Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy video game, a third-person action game due for on October 26, 2021.
Completely detached from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in this game you play as Peter Quill/Starlord, while the other members of the Guardians, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot, are there to provide supporting roles as non-playable characters. Early glimpses at gameplay highlight Starlord’s Elemental Blasters, capable of spraying out lasers while Peter Quill traverses the world. Gun-based combat definitely seems to be the key to gameplay.
In the Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy video game, the Guardians have been working together for just under a year, when they discover ‘something really big that threatens the galaxy, though we don’t yet know what this is quite yet. Eidos also teased that some well-known villains will appear in the game, but kept any familiar adversaries totally under wraps in this reveal.
The Guardians are struggling to make enough money to keep their ship, needing to take more jobs to stay afloat. Together they’ll traverse a range of planets, with the announcement focusing on a rainy and lightning-based planet, and the variety of enemies within. Like the Mass Effect series, players can choose from a variety of dialogue options. In the preview, Quill has to choose which member of the Guardians to listen to during an argument, suggesting an array of branching dialogue that may impact the overall story. The tone of the Marvel films is here, with bouncy music and plenty of humor, but Eidos make it very clear that this is a totally new and unique story.
It’s also unclear whether this game will tie into Square Enix’s Avengers game or be totally separate. The Avengers game is more of a co-op, live-service experience, so the differences in gameplay could mean they won’t cross over.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is confirmed for release on October 26, 2021, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC.
