Three years after the previous mainline game, Kingdom Hearts is finally back! In a 20th anniversary event late on Sunday, April 10, Square Enix confirmed two new games for the Disney-based RPG series. They are Kingdom Hearts 4, a new core series installment, plus a mobile game called Kingdom Hearts Missing Link. Kingdom Hearts 4 and Missing Link Announced
Yes, two new Kingdom Hearts games are on the way — though fan excitement is almost certainly geared toward Kingdom Hearts 4. Towards the end of the series’ 20th anniversary celebration, Square Enix dropped a short teaser for the new game, though details are otherwise slim.
The footage shows series protagonist Sora returning, back after his appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Donning a new pair of shoes, which has had fans up in arms, it teases the new adventure to come. Of course, we also see Disney stalwarts Donald Duck and Goofy, reiterating that the series is remaining true to its House of Mouse roots. The trailer is set in a brand-new realm called the Quadratum. By the looks of things, it’s a futuristic city quite different to other Kingdom Hearts settings. It’s no safe haven though, because the arrival of kaiju-esque monsters calls our hero into action.
Details are still thin on the ground about the Kingdom Hearts 4 release date. For context, Kingdom Hearts 3 was announced in 2013 before releasing in 2019, so it could be quite a wait. However, there is gameplay in this reveal trailer, suggesting development is reasonably far down the line.
The other good news is that the new mobile game, Kingdom Hearts Missing Link, should arrive this year. It takes place across multiple realms, combining the AR mechanics of Pokémon GO with real-time action combat. While it isn’t quite as exciting as a new mainline title, it should tide players by until Kingdom Hearts 4 eventually releases. Given how long development tends to take on this series, it could be a while!
