Non-traditional controllers are nothing new to video games. Duck Hunt, from Nintendo, was among the first to utilize a plastic pistol to shoot mallards. And Guitar Hero, the massive hit developed by Harmonix, allowed players to strum along with their favorite songs.
Nintendo wanted to do something fun with Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat. So they made the game compatible with a pair of bongo drums. Gamers would play the bongos in order to move Kong through different levels of the game.
Twitch streamer DeanoBeano realized that the bongos could not only be used for Donkey Kong but could be used for other games as well.
The DK bongos actually feature 5 buttons, but the gamer was able to expand the function by remapping the buttons. This allowed him to “use the scope, shoot, crouch, slide, and even emote like players using more traditional controllers.”
The gamer wasn’t the first to use bongos in a non-Donkey Kong Game, as he said he was inspired by Super Louis 64 who used the instrument to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. He might be the most impressive, however. He amassed 105 kills during play including multiple head shots.
