It’s no secret that there are plenty of insensitive moments scattered throughout old World of Warcraft content. Blizzard has been making changes to those insensitive areas and the company continues to remove, rename, and rethink old content.
From insensitive jokes to outright discrimination and strangely chosen emotes that lend themselves to player abuse, the company really has been trying to make its ecosystem more welcoming to a larger number of players.
According to WoWHead, Blizzard has recently named the NPC Finkle Einhorn to Pip Quickwit. If you’re not in the know, the original name is a reference to a stereotyped transgender character in the Jim Carrey-led film, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.
Other renaming includes Mac’Aree to Eradath, a move that has required new voice lines to be added for the name.
Blizzard has also removed almost every mention of “Greenskins.” This move was based more on what some players thought was a direct ripoff for Warhammer.
As MMORPG.com points out Blizzard has been busy and has already removed some sexual references and jokes the company now deems to be overly risque.
With more than 20 years of gameplay and development, the Blizzard cleanup for World of Warcraft is likely to be an ongoing discussion with many action items to complete over the long term.
Now Blizzard just needs to clean up the alleged hostile work environment and discrimination it has allegedly been fostering for years.
