Marvel and DC Comics have been the two most prominent names in comics since the early 1960s. However, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t other publishers creating great books. Image Comics, founded in the early ’90s by a number of big-name artists, is still a prominent brand. And Dark Horse, the publisher behind titles like Hellboy, Sin City, and Umbrella Academy, has been around since 1986.

Dark Horse, based in Milwaukie, Oregon, has a new home. Video game publisher the Embracer Group has purchased the comic company

“I can’t express the excitement I feel as Dark Horse moves into this new chapter in our history,” said Mike Richardson the founder of the comic brand.

Richardson continued:

“The synergies that exist with the Embracer network of companies promise exciting new opportunities not only for Dark Horse but also for the creators and companies we work with. I’ve had a number of compelling conversations with Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors and I’m very impressed with him and what he and his team have built. I have to say, the future for our company has never looked brighter.”

The Embracer Group is already overseeing over 250 major properties. These include Saints Row, Borderlands and World War Z.

Fans of Dark Horse can expect to see more of the company in the movies and on television. The publisher wrote in a press release, “Dark Horse is in a strong position in a market where entertainment content is in high demand. This proof-point can be seen in Dark Horse’s strong pipeline of over 40 projects at Netflix, Amazon, Syfy, Sony, MGM, Universal, and Warner Media.”

At the moment, the key people at Dark Horse will be staying where they are. According to the press release, no major restructuring is expected.
