Fallen Earth, a post-apocalyptic MMORPG, has been delighting fans since its release back in 2009. But like any title not tied into a major publisher, it needs funding to keep going. The title had to go off servers for two years. It was resurrected his year, though, and became available to play in October.
Little Orbit purchased the IP in 2018. And CEO Matt Scott is trying to get creative in funding the game. He asked followers this week, “I keep getting asked by Fallen Earth players how they can support us and improve the game. Real question: would anyone be interested in unique Fallen Earth character NFTs? Possibly full 3D rigged models? But only used as a mechanism to fund the next big wave of development?”
The response to the questions was overwhelmingly negative. Most responses were something like “no” or “hell no.” One respondent, though, wrote, “Don’t do this. Fallen Earth is a treasure of an IP for Little Orbit, and doing this will ruin it before the Unity port even has a chance at coming out. There’s bad ideas and there’s Jar-Jar Binks level ideas, and this is dumber than Jar-Jar Binks.”
After seeing the responses, Scott continued, “The backlash is real — and for good reason if publishers are going to start modifying good games and trying to shoehorn in NFTs to the gameplay. But NFTs as an alternative to Kickstarter seemed like an idea worth considering.”
Players have shown a severe resistance to NFTs in any of their games. Ubisoft recently announced a program featuring the non-fungible tokens called Quartz. There has been little to no interest in their “digits.”
