George R. R. Martin Comments on his Role in Elden Ring Development

George R. R. Martin, best known for not completing his work as author of the Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones series), has elaborated on his role on Elden Ring.

The update comes directly from the blog of George R. R. Martin himself.

“A few years back, Hidetaka Miyazaki and his incredible team of game designers, the creators of the Dark Souls video game games, reached out from Japan to ask me to help them create a backstory and history for a new game they were working on. Now, video games are not really my thing…but this offer was too exciting to refuse.

We already knew that George R. R. Martin’s role in Elden Ring was regarding backstory and world building. We learned earlier this year that this work on the game concluded years ago. During an interview with WWTW, Martin said he “worked up a fairly detailed background for [From Software], and then they took it from there. It’s been several years since I’ve last seen them, but they would come in periodically and show me some monsters they’d design.”

“The game has been very slow developing. I’ll be as excited as anyone else to see it.”

Now that he’s seen it, George R. R. Martin thinks the game looks “incredible.”

Seeing as I took the time to watch the entire trailer before posting it below, I’m inclined to agree.

“I did my bit, and handed off to my new friends in Japan, and they took it from there,” Martin continued. “And years passed. Video games are as big as movies these days (bigger actually)…and take just as long to create.”

Not as long as novels apparently, George.

After a long wait, Elden Ring is available on February 25th, 2022. It will be available for PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4.

There is no word yet on when George R. R. Martin will finish writing Song of Ice and Fire. Best to leave that one alone, sadly.
