Supergiant Games is delivering the roguelike genre another serving of undead gameplay with Hades 2. The original remains both a classic and a staple in roguelike gaming, with various outlets praising the epic adventures of Zagreus, son of Hades. Now that players have their hands on the sequel, fans are excited to take on the Titan of Time as Melinoe, the game’s new protagonist.

While folks are thrilled to play as Zagreus’s sister, many wonder where he is in Hades 2. Upon running through the Underworld, we’re aware of Zagreus’ absence, though he doesn’t appear anywhere. Where is our brother, and does he make an appearance in Hades 2?

Caution: This post unveils key story elements involving major characters from Hades 2. It is a spoiler warning for anyone who wishes to avoid plot points regarding Hades 2.

Yes, Zagreus is in Hades 2, but not as a playable character or a comrade. Due to his imprisonment in time, Zagreus cannot be found in the Crossroads. He and other gods remain under Chronus’s captivity, encased in time-locked orange pillars. This is unveiled in a flashback when players take control of Hades, who encounters his father.

Additionally, when running into Chaos, Primordial Originator, in Hades 2, Melinoe is asked about her brother. Specifically, Chaos refers to him as “a different Spawn of Hades.” Here, Melinoe reveals where Chronus has “taken” Zagreus, their parents, and other gods into the lowest reaches of the Underworld. The flashback with Hades and Chronus further confirms this when the former discovers the detained state of his family.

The Family Portrait

Melinoe consistently reminds herself of the task at hand in Hades 2. Ultimately, she must defeat Chronus, the Titan of Time, and save her family from her grandfather’s grasp. While her family is absent, there is a family portrait you can always view or “brood” whenever you resurrect in the Crossroads. Sitting on a table beside a chest illuminates a picture of Hades, Persephone, Zagreus, and baby Melinoe.

While brooding won’t necessarily solve Melinoe’s issues, it gives players hope that Zagreus will soon be free. It’s all a matter of time when it involves Chronus in Hades 2.
