According to Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan, there are plans to push PlayStation gaming into the cloud beyond PS Plus. With the current market share for cloud gaming at around 1-3%, Sony is looking to capitalize on the cloud even further.

At the recent Sony Game and Network Services segment meeting, CEO Jim Ryan said the following about the future of cloud gaming for PlayStation. “There’s been lots of attention around cloud gaming. We observe mobility in gaming habits to be an increasingly important trend. The cloud will be fundamental to allowing us or anyone else to exploit that trend of mobility,”

“We have–unfortunately today is not the day for me to expose these plans–but we have some fairly interesting and aggressive quite aggressive plans to accelerate our initiatives in [the cloud] that will be announced in the coming months.”

PlayStation was arguably at the forefront of cloud gaming with its original PlayStation Now subscription but began to fall in popularity after PlayStation Plus debuted. Once the PlayStation Plus tiered subscription incorporated the original service into its model and prices increased, Sony began to lose its hold on the market. With Microsoft’s Game Pass service, the lion’s share of the cloud gaming market has belonged to Xbox. Sony is hoping to dethrone them with their new strategy.
