S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is Getting NFTs That Let You Become a 'Metahuman'

UPDATE [Dec. 17]

Just kidding.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl is jumping aboard the NFT bandwagon. One such NFT will allow players to become the “first-ever metahuman.”

Speaking with The Verge, here’s what GSC Game World CEO Evgeniy Grygorovych said in a statement:

The idea of the related NFT is to give the right to recreate its owner’s identity within the game through one of the NPCs. The person will need to come to our studio for a detailed scanning procedure and after that, we will have everything to make this person appear in the game world as one of the characters.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 isn’t the first game to try to incorporate NFTs. Ubisoft did the same as well recently.

Reaction online has been pretty poor, as expected.

A common refrain on Twitter has been that there are few, if any, topics that gamers have so universally agreed upon. With NFTs, it’s almost always a big resounding no from online chatter.

Peter Molyneux’s new game has already sold millions in NFTs. To be fair, we don’t know who’s buying them to tell if it’s genuine interest or investors propping up the value.

GSC Game World promises that other NFTs won’t influence the gameplay or give in-game advantages over other players in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2.

The developer spoke with the website wccftech regarding the backlash to NFTs.

Q: There is a strong anti-blockchain/NFT sentiment among gamers. Ubisoft recently introduced its Quartz platform and the reveal video quickly amassed an extremely high amount of dislikes on YouTube. Don’t you fear that this may influence the currently positive sentiment surrounding S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2?

A: We believe our community will benefit and appreciate everything the Metaverse will bring. This includes rewards, winning assets, trading, and the opportunity to earn and have fun at the same time. Indeed, there is a certain tension towards blockchain and NFTs, because lots of things have been done improperly in the space. We are taking this path as we would like to be amongst the first who will bring their community to a new digital era.
