Skyrim Special Edition vs Anniversary Edition Differences

Since its initial release in 2011, Skyrim has reigned as one of the greatest video games of all time. To this day, gamers are still enjoying everything the timeless classic medieval RPG adventure has to offer. At the same time, some players are just getting started with Bethesda’s renowned title. If this describes you, you’re probably debating between Skyrim Special Edition vs the Anniversary Edition. Is one better than the other? What are their differences? Read on to find out!

The main difference between Skyrim Special Edition vs the Anniversary Edition is that the latter includes numerous mods from the Skyrim Creation Club. This is essentially a Bethesda-supported store, done in cooperation with community modders. While the Special Edition can access the Creation Club, the Anniversary Edition comes packed-in with 74 pieces of downloadable content. This is anything from new weapons and armor to locations and quests. As a result, you’re effectively getting more content in the Anniversary Edition than you do in the Special Edition.

Furthermore, the Anniversary Edition is the more recent title, having been released in 2021, whereas the Special Edition was released in 2016. Given this, the Anniversary Edition does have slightly better graphics than the Special Edition. However, in the grand scheme of things, both games’ graphics have been improved upon since their initial release. So, the difference isn’t as drastic as you might think, and both should provide a visually immersive experience.

Nonetheless, when the choice comes down to Skyrim Special Edition vs the Anniversary Edition, we’d say go with the latter. At the end of the day, the Anniversary edition has more content, is a more recent release, and thus has slightly better graphics. At the same time, both versions are remasters of the original game and will provide you with the true, authentic Skyrim experience you’re looking for.
