Super Mario RPG players will collect and use a wide range of items during their time in Mario’s world. Whether equipping new accessories or utilizing special items in combat, Mario and his friends will always have something to bring into play. One such item that comes to mind is the Crystal Shard, which can only be acquired later in the game.

The Crystal Shard, however, is unlike any other item in Super Mario RPG. It’s a unique object that is challenging to obtain. Yet, once some players get their hands on it, there’s a bit of confusion surrounding the item’s significance and properties. What exactly does the Crystal Shard do in Super Mario RPG? How can Mario and his friends use it in the game? The answers might be a bit surprising.

How to Use the Crystal Shard in Super Mario RPG

The Crystal Shard in Super Mario RPG is a special item given to players as a reward for defeating Culex in a post-game rematch. It’s granted as a symbol of “ultimate strength,” having bested Culex in a 3D fight. And that’s all it is: a symbol that players can carry to showcase their efforts. The item provides no tangible bonuses or battle effects.

With that said, completionists looking to 100% the game must acquire the Crystal Shard. Defeating Culex in the post-game rematch is necessary as part of the post-game content.

Expert Tip

Culex is an extremely dangerous boss, and its four elemental crystals can deal some severe damage if players aren’t careful. For the best results, it’s recommended that players equip the Safety Ring to protect themselves from mortal blows and adverse status effects. Furthermore, a Lazy Shell can help provide some significant defensive stats for any member of Mario’s party.

Culex appears in Super Mario RPG as the game’s superboss. His area is accessible before players can take on Smithy, though he’s arguably one of the most formidable enemies. Accompanied by four elemental crystals, Culex challenges Mario and his companions to a fight for reasons of his choosing.

In the remake, Culex achieves three-dimensional power after players defeat Smithy. By restoring the Star Road, Culex’s wishes have been granted, and Mario and Co. can challenge him to a fight once more as a part of the post-game content. The first fight (before the Star Road is repaired) concludes with Mario obtaining the Quartz Charm, a powerful item that provides a couple of boosts.

By defeating Culex in the post-game rematch, players succeed in besting the superboss at his “strongest.” Moreover, the villain will be reduced back to his 2D form. Thus, by overcoming Culex, the superboss will exclaim, “There are none more powerful than you!”

In truth, once players get the Crystal Shard, there is no stricter foe to face once Culex is taken care of. As a result, you should speak with the Frog Sage (Mallow’s adoptive grandfather) for clues on what to do next in Super Mario RPG.
