How to get the Companion Cube

Terraria has proven to be one of the most successful and long-supported games in recent memory. It’s no secret that games made by small teams such as this one often have easter eggs associated with other popular franchises. One of the rarest items in Terraria is in fact the Companion Cube, a item that is quite the nod to the Portal series. It is one of the rarest items in the game, so we’re here to tell you how to get your pixelated hands on one!

How to Get the Companion Cube in Terraria

The Companion Cube actually has a chance to be available pretty early in Terraria. Once you manage to get the Traveling Merchant to come by your area after getting two NPCs to stick around, there is a chance he will be selling it.

Be warned though, his items for sale change every day, and there is only a small chance each time he shows that he’ll have a Companion Cube for sale. To make it even harder, it is also the most expensive item in the game. It will set you back a kingly sum of five Platinum Coins.

Getting the Companion Cube will take some dedication and grinding for sure, so what does such an expensive item do for you? Ultimately, not much. If anything, it can actually be dangerous to have around.

The item summons a pet Companion Cube that will follow you throughout your journey. Aside from occasionally emitting a fart noise, it doesn’t do much else besides follow you around. That is, until you both find yourselves in total darkness anyways.

In pitch-black environments, the Companion Cube will randomly stab you for three damage. It is capable of killing you as well if you allow it to do enough damage to you. Keeping any portable light source handy, such as a torch or a light pet, will help keep it in line.
