Saints Row, was first developed by THQ in 2006 for the Xbox. There were a number of sequels and eventually the game expanded to other consoles like Playstation and Nintendo Switch.
In August of 2019, it was announced that Volition would be rebooting the game. The hope was that the game would return to featuring a balance between serious gameplay and comedy.
The initial release date was February 25, 2022. That date, however, has been pushed back to August of next year.
In a note posted to Twitter as well as the games Blog, Volition’s Chief Creative Officer Jim Boone wrote, “In all honesty, we underestimated the impact COVID would have on our schedule, although everyone adapted very quickly to the working from home arrangement and continued to be incredibly productive.”
Boone continued, “Our priority is to create the best Saints Row game yet and, if we released on the original date, it wouldn’t be up to the standards we’ve set ourselves, and that you’re expecting and deserve. The team just need more time to do our vision justice; we’re doing some fine-tuning and there won’t be much change in the game outside of overall quality and polish.”
February was already looking to be a massive month for games with Elden Ring, The King of Fighters XV, and Horizon Forbidden West all dropping. In the long run, it might be to Saints Row’s benefit to debut in a less competitive month.
