According to a report from Bloomberg, the rumored Warcraft mobile MMORPG in development has been canceled. It was in development as part of a partnership between Blizzard and the Chinese developer NetEase.
It should be noted that this is a separate project from Warcraft Arclight Rumble.
Code-named Neptune, the now-canceled title was planned as a Warcraft mobile MMORPG in Azeroth during a different time period. A team of 100 developers at NetEase has been disbanded as well.
Bloomberg’s report mentions a disagreement between Blizzard and NetEase over terms concerning the game. Further information is not available at this time.
This is not the first partnership between Blizzard and NetEase. The two companies collaborated on Diablo Immortal, which recently generated over $100 million in revenue. Despite that, in our review of Diablo Immortal, we didn’t care for the game’s predatory freemium pay model.
Many people were concerned that a Warcraft mobile MMORPG would be susceptible to the same pay-to-win model. With the game’s cancellation, we won’t have to worry about that anymore.
