The next N64 game for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is Wave Race 64. Nintendo announced that the title would become available on August 19th.
The Wave Race franchise debuted on the Game Boy in 1992. Its most recent entry, Wave Race: Blue Storm, was released in 2001 on the Nintendo GameCube. The franchise has since been dormant despite a cult following and popular demand.
Wave Race 64 was released as a Nintendo 64 launch window title in 1996. It was met with acclaim for its racing, graphics, and soundtrack. Often referred to as “F-Zero on water,” it provides challenging WaveRunner-style racing with a simple yet polished approach.
A press release from Nintendo highlights the game’s features. It mentions the Championship Mode racing, Time Trails, Stunt Mode, and being able to “challenge a friend in 2P VS. Mode.” There is no mention about whether or not Wave Race 64 will have any type of online multiplayer; we’ll have to keep our fingers crossed for now.
Nintendo has been adding new Nintendo 64 games every month for Nintendo Switch Online. While we don’t know what titles are next, we have plenty on our wish list. I’d love to see Donkey Kong 64 get a re-release myself. I’ll be thinking about it while I hum the Wave Race 64 theme song over and over all day today.
