80’s Roguelite Mythforce Announced by Ex-bioware Devs

The 80’s never dies, doesn’t it? That’s what the developers at Beamdog are counting on with MythForce. Leaping from remastering the likes of Baldur’s Gate and Planescape: Torement, Beamdog’s latest is a cooperative roguelite-FPS-brawler-RPG.

Wow, that is a lot of hyphens.

The hybrid mashup promises to be a modern Gauntlet for the ages, boasting impressive cel-shaded cartoon aesthetics evoking Dragon’s Lair. There’s even a jamming animated intro with its own synth-infused theme song!

While we don’t know whether it’ll boast as much bite or be a more forgiving quest, it won’t be long till we find out as MythForce will be launching into Early Access on April 20, 2022, as an Epic Game Store exclusive. The initial PC release will be $29.99.

“I’m beyond excited to finally show off our team’s original work,” said Trent Oster, Beamdog CEO. “MythForce is pure, unadulterated fun— right out of the Saturday mornings of my childhood. With a simple yet satisfying game loop, it’s a big departure from the RPG classics we’re known for, but the Beamdog DNA is evident if you know where to look.”

To Me, My Mythforce!

The Early Access launch will include four playable heroes for “Episode 1: Bastion of the Beastlord”. Whether relying on “legendary” weapons or ancient magic, you and up to three friends can team up online to tackle overgrown ruins.

The progression sounds much in line with Gunfire Reborn, with session-only perks as well as upgrades that carry over. Maps, enemies, and loot are all procedurally generated, ensuring no quest plays out the same.

MythForce is a feel-good game that speaks to the kid in us. In Early Access we want to collaborate with players who are excited by our wholesome, 80s vision for MythForce, and build up the best game possible. Community will be key to getting us to 1.0,” said Oster.

The wholesome aspect is a surprise, as man 80’s homages tend towards a more cynical edge. Instead, perhaps the only real knowing tweak to the classic format is the gorgeous designs not only for the heroes, but the villain vampires besieging the world of Eldrith.

Between its presentation, whimsical tone, and high fantasy setting, MythForce has a promising pitch that we’ll be keeping an eye on. Beamdog plans to release additional episodes and updates during the game’s Early Access period, incorporating input from players. You can wishlist MythForce on the Epic Games Store now.
