Electronic Arts is reportedly toying with the idea of a free to play Battlefield 2042.

There was plenty of anticipation for 2042, the newest release in the franchise. Unfortunately for EA and DICE, the game has landed with a bit of a thud. According to one leaker, the reviews have been so poor that EA might make the title free to play.

The news came via n ted insider Tom Henderson. Henderson tweeted, “EA is reportedly very disappointed with how Battlefield 2042 has performed and is “looking at all the options” when it comes to the title, this is including looking at Free to Play in some capacity.”

Henderson had promised to update on Friday, but he isn’t quite ready to do so yet. He updated followers, “Give me a little more time on this. I’m consulting analysts, lawyers, and developers and it’s taking a bit of time to put it together. I want to provide answers instead of questions.”

There has been a split on how critics and gamers feel about the title. Critics have been somewhat kind to the game, and at worst, luke warm about it. Gamers, though, have had very adverse reactions.

Shortly after the game was released, the critic Metascore for the title stood at 80 out of 100. The gamer score for the game, though, was just at a 2.8 out of 8.0.

  1. Battlefield 4 was the Most fun Battlefield to date, and I played that past level 100 on Xbox 360 AND then again when I upgraded to ps4. Not only was the game fantastic it had a great campaign to go with it. Devs are often not responsible for including a story campaign mode anymore and without the stress of building a campaign mode, how are the multiplayer components of these new titles coming out so bad?
