Assassin’s Creed first hit gaming systems back in 2007. The title was an immediate hit, winning multiple awards at E3 and selling more than 8 million copies. The game has spawned several sequels, the latest being 2020’s Assasin’s Creed: Valhalla, which became the 2nd most profitable title in Ubisoft’s history.
Which so much success, more sequels are sure to be made. But back in the early days, the original creator Patrice Désilets and Assasin Creed 3’s creative director, Alex Hutchinson, had a much different plan. According to former Ph.D. Student Lars de Wildt, the game was meant to end in outer space.
de Wildt interviewed both Désilets and Hutchinson about the game in 2019. This week, he revealed some of what he learned from the creators.
The former student noted, “The original plan was pieced together based on interviews by me with AC’s original creator Patrice Désilets and AC3’s creative director Alex Hutchinson.”
de Wildt continued:
“Briefly put, the third game would end with a resolution of the conflict in the present day, with Desmond Miles taking down Abstergo using the combined knowledge and skills of all his ancestors, including AC1’s Altair and AC2’s Ezio. Also, it is the end of the world in 2012, and Desmond Miles and Lucy are starting a new civilization somewhere else – as Adam and Eve.”
When de Wildt pressed Désilets about where the heroes were supposed to end up, the creator responded, “Boum! It’s a freaking spaceship!”
Of course, the plans changed dramatically for the game makers. Since 2012, when the game may have ended, there have been seven more versions and several sequels.
