According to a report by Xfire’s Tom Henderson, “valuable lessons” have been learned to assist the Battlefield franchise moving forward. It’s unsure if those valuable lessons hold merit or if it’s just blaming other things for 2042’s failure.
With the next title in the Battlefield franchise in pre-production, DICE and EA will have to use those lessons to bring the series back to its glory days. “I think we’ll be reverting a lot of the changes we made in Battlefield 2042”, a source said.
Recent feedback sessions and playtests focused on Battlefield 2042’s class system. This led to specialist roles being connected to classes. It’s a stark comparison to the hero shooter the next game was reportedly going to be.
While Henderson wasn’t sure about what the next title in the Battlefield franchise would entail, he did mention that it would be set in a modern or near-future setting.
As for the future of Battlefield 2014, Henderson had this to say:
A large portion of DICE has now moved on to the next title in the series (as is industry standard). However, there’s still a strong and dedicated team working on Battlefield 2042 and its future content, despite concerns from the community that the game has been abandoned.
New modes, weapons, vehicles, maps, and more are still coming to Battlefield 2042 and are expected to be delivered throughout its life cycle. In addition, Ripple Effect is working hard to bring new content to Battlefield Portal soon.

There’s no word on whether or not we’re still getting a free-to-play Battlefield 2042. It seems like EA and DICE are still committed to developing content for it. I can understand why they’d want to move on, though.
