Nintendo announced on Wednesday morning the long-awaited Bayonetta 3 release date. The game is finally coming out on October 28, 2022. Nintendo is publishing the sequel as a Switch exclusive. It is one of our most anticipated Switch-exclusive games for 2022.

The third game in the series pits Bayonetta and her friends against the Homunculi, a new race of monsters that have attacked the world. Unlike past threats in the series, the Homunculi are specifically described as being created by humans.

As Bayonetta travels across Japan and China to fight them, she’s joined by another playable character, Viola, who’s described as a “feisty witch-in-training.” Viola wields an oversized sword and Cheshire, a catlike demon.

New mechanics in Bayonetta 3 include Demon Slave, which lets the player take direct control of one of Bayonetta’s trademark demons, and Demon Masquerade, where Bayonetta fuses with a demon to unlock new powers.

Bayonetta 3 Release Date Reveal and New Trailer

In addition to standard digital and physical versions, Bayonetta 3 will receive a special collector’s version called the Trinity Masquerade Edition, available for purchase at the My Nintendo store and unspecified retailers. While full details have yet to be released, it’s planned to come with a 200-page artbook and three reversible game cases.

Further, Nintendo plans to re-release the original 2009 Bayonetta for the Switch on September 30 in a new, standalone physical edition for $29.99. The first game has technically been available for the Switch since 2017, but only as a separate download bundled with Bayonetta 2.

Bayonetta 3 was originally announced at the Game Awards in December 2017, but the production went quiet for a few years. Proof of life abruptly showed up in September 2021, when a new trailer aired during a Nintendo Direct. Finally today, the Bayonetta 3 release date was revealed. It’s been a long time coming, but we’re finally here.

The third game is again co-directed by creator Hideki Kamiya, who’s joined by returning staff Yuji Shimomura, Masaki Suzumura, and Mari Shimazaki. It has not yet been confirmed nor denied that Bayonetta’s English voice actress, Hellena Taylor, has been replaced in the new game.
