The legendary Call of Duty video game series has released a whopping 19 titles. And since 2005, a COD game has been released every year. With so many games being released and on such a schedule, there will be a mixture of duds and hits.
Unfortunately for Sledgehammer Games and Activision, 2021’s Call of Duty: Vanguard is looking more like a dud. The game was criticized for its zombie feature and lack of innovation. IGN’s Luke Winkie wrote in a negative review:
“With just three repetitive mission types and no overarching main quest arriving until December, Zombies feels frustratingly empty at the moment. Who could’ve imagined the curse of undeath would be so boring?”
Luckily, though, for the developer and publisher, they won’t have to wait long to show gamers their next title. According to noted leaker Tim Henderson, the release of 2022’s Call of Duty game could be pushed up.
Henderson tweeted, “As expected, it’s looking like this year’s Call of Duty title, Modern Warfare II (2022), will be revealed in the summer. Hearing rumblings that the title could release in October due to Vanguard’s poor sales performance, with a “big” Warzone update coming soon after.”
If Henderson is correct, Activision and Sledgehammer will be attacking their problems in two ways. Unlike Vanguard, 2020’s Call of Duty: Warzone was a significant hit. Gamers loved the titles take on a battle royale-style title. So an update to that game would surely be appreciated. The update’s release follows along a similar schedule as previous COD releases.
The second prong to the plan is obvious. By pushing up the release date of Modern Warfare II, Activision and Sledgehammer are moving fast to get the bad taste of Vanguard out of gamers’ mouths.
Modern Warfare II is expected to be released on PS4, PS5, Xbox X/S, and PC.
