Today at Summer Game Fest, we looked at the new gameplay of the upcoming survival horror game Callisto Protocol. And man does it look like a bloody good time. The two or so minute-long gameplay reveal included looks at new weapons, enemies, and areas.

The Grip, the new weapon revealed, works like a gravity gun and lets you pull enemies to you and push them away. This led to some rather gruesome and gory brutalities with enemies more or less being eaten by fast-spinning, industrial-size fans.

We also saw an environmental death in the power plant with the player character being pulled in and shredded by a turbine. Gameplay continues to show inspiration from the Dead Space series with dismemberment playing a part in slowing down enemies. Losing a limb doesn’t slow them down as much as you think. Combat seems fast and fluid, and swapping between guns and melee weapons appears quite snappy.

We also got a glimpse at some of the storytelling mechanics. In the med bay, we see a scene through a hologram of two doctors being murdered by one of the game’s creatures. The gameplay footage was very moody and immersive. Hopefully, it sets the tone for what we can expect in the rest of the game.

Callisto Protocol comes from the creator of Dead Space, Glen Schoefield. It initially started as a spin-off of the battle royale game PUBG. Since, though, it has been adapted to a standalone game separate from that universe.

We saw a glimpse of Callisto Protocol at Sony’s State of Play just last week. That reveal gave us a deeper look at how inspired by Dead Space the game will be. However, it’s safe to say it’s also forging its own identity.

Callisto Protocol is coming out December 2, 2022, for Xbox Series X and Series S, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows.
