Sometimes there’s no substitution for the real thing. The recently released Dead Space Remake is a success with critics and fans alike. However, despite the excitement for a new IP from Dead Space creator Glen Schofield, the original is proving to be more popular.

Dead Space has an active player base on Steam, with a peak of 30k players. This is almost double the peak player count for 2022’s The Callisto Protocol, developed by Schofield’s new studio, Striking Distance Games.

The data comes from GitHyp. Their analysis also details a considerable drop off in active players after the launch window of Callisto Protocol. Comparatively, the Dead Space Remake is holding steady thanks to positive word of mouth.

Developed by EA Motive, 2023’s Dead Space is the remake and remaster of the beloved 2008 survival horror game. It currently holds a Metascore in the high 80s across all three release platforms: Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. Many admire the faithful adaptation of the source material that benefits significantly from the remastered enhancements.

After the original release in 2008, Electronic Arts released two additional games in the Dead Space series. It is unknown whether there are plans to remake Dead Space 2 and 3. However, given the success of the first remake, you have to imagine it’s on the table.

Conversely, in our review of The Callisto Protocol, we mention that there’s potential to be found, but it lacks Dead Space’s polish, refinement, and magic of Dead Space. We’ll see if Schofield and the team at Striking Distance Games get another shot with The Callisto Protocol. But, for now, survival horror fans are more than happy with what EA Motive has done.

The Dead Space remake is available now for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 4.
