Update: Jeff Grubb rectified his initial statement saying that “A bit of a game of telephone here, but I definitely meant to say it’s “at least 18 months away” not “within the next 18 months.”
Original story below.
A new Dragon Age game has not been released since 2014 when Dragon Age Inquisition came out. The game was well-received by both fans and critics, but it’s been a long time since players have gotten to delve into these familiar worlds. Thankfully, it looks like there is hope on the horizon for fans of the fantasy role-playing series. After the failure of Bioware’s last game, Anthem, Dragon Age 4 has taken priority. The release date reveal might not be too far off.
Over the course of its development, there have been several staff changes. First, creative director Mike Laidlaw left the company after fourteen years at Bioware in 2017. In November 2021, Senior Creative Director Matt Goldman decided he was leaving after exclusively working on Dragon Age since 2009. While such big changes do not necessarily mean there are developmental hang-ups, it, at the very least, does not expedite progress on the game.
Now, after much waiting, word has come out that Dragon Age 4 might not be too far off. On an episode of the podcast GrubbSnax, host Jeff Grubb said that the game is in “very good shape.” While Grubb isn’t a part of Bioware, he has connections as a long-time journalist.
He went on to say, “It is still at least 18 months out from today, so not early 2023, maybe late 2023, maybe. That seems to be the earliest you can begin to expect it.”
Despite the game still being early in its development, a teaser for the game was first released in December 2020. Fans are anxious to see what’s next in the hit Bioware series.
