Embracer Group Gains Rights to Lord of the Rings, Hobbit, Other Studios

The Embracer Group has announced via press releases that they have acquired the rights to several IPs and studios.

Headlined by the literary works of J.R.R. Tolkein, the list of acquisitions also includes Limited Run Games, Singtrix, Tuxedo Laps, and Tripwire Interactive. The video game rights for Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit have been up for sale since February.

Embracer Group also acquired Eidos, Crystal Dynamics, and other assets a few months ago. “Multiple” additional announcements are expected to be made at Gamescom next week.

In total, the amount of currently in-development projects at Embracer Group now totals 220. Twenty-five are listed as “AAA games,” one of which is “highly anticipated” and will be released in the Fourth Quater of 2022. Presumably, this will be one of the Gamescom announcements.

The bevy of in-development projects offsets the news of the Knights of the Old Republic remake being delayed indefinitely.

Tripwire Interactive is best known for its work on the Killing Floor franchise. They will operate as a subsidiary under the Saber Interactive operative group. There is no reported interruption to their current development pipeline.

Tuxedo Labs will become a part of the Saber Interactive operative group. They are best known for the game Teardown, which was released earlier this year.

Once Embracer Group makes its Gamescom announcement, we’ll surely pass along the news. Gamescom takes place in Cologne, Germany, from August 24th through the 28th.
