We’ve waited a long time to experience GoldenEye 007 online multiplayer. A chance to relive the glory days of our youths when we would play the iconic FPS in split-screen multiplayer.

Announced during today’s Nintendo Direct, developer Rare Ltd. confirmed that the title would also be coming to Xbox Game Pass.

Rumors of the remaster have been rampant thanks to the leaked Xbox achievements showing up earlier this year. Some thought an E3 announcement was imminent, but that wasn’t the case. It turns out that Nintendo would be the one to reveal the return of GoldenEye.

If you’re hoping to experience GoldenEye 007 online multiplayer on Xbox, though, I’m afraid the mode is exclusive to Nintendo Switch.

A press release on the official Xbox news wire has zero mention of any online modes for GoldenEye 007, just local multiplayer.

“The classic campaign mode, transformative difficulty levels and havoc-inducing cheats will all make their return,” it reads, “as will the iconic split-screen local multiplayer mode, allowing up to four players to take to the couch in a battle of wits and skill.”

A posting on the official James Bond 007 website confirms this, stating that “exclusive to the new Switch version of the 1997 title will be online play, allowing 007 fans across the world to take part in the popular four person multiplayer mode together.”

The Xbox release of GoldenEye 007 will feature a 4K resolution remaster, but it’s still disappointing that there are currently no plans for online multiplayer.

GoldenEye 007 was one of our most desired Nintendo Switch ports. We’re glad we can finally relive the classic multiplayer title and, for the first time, experience online multiplayer action. It’s a shame that Xbox owners won’t be able to do the same.

It’s also noted that owners of Rare Replay will get access to GoldenEye 007 free of charge on Xbox.
