Care for a game of Gwent? It’s a question you can finally answer on its own with the upcoming standalone release!
The Witcher, a TV series based on a video game based on a series of novels, is a runaway hit. The show’s second season recently dropped on Netflix, and a third season of the show is already in production.
With so much buzz about the series, CD Projekt Red realizes that gamers are hungry for more Witcher content. And they will get that in 2022 with a standalone game based on the card game Gwent.
The card game was first introduced as a mini-game in 2015’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and was an immediate hit with players. Gwent was also perfect for eSports, with tournaments for the game quickly popping up. The mini-game was nominated for Most Promising New eSports Game at the 2019 SXSW.
Unlike the version in The Witcher 3, the standalone version of the game is a single-player experience. Gamers are used to playing against human opponents in other versions of the game. The studio has also attached a codename, Project Golden Nekker. Players will not need to own any different game versions to play.
Gwent Comms Lead Paweł Burza explained, “It’s not another Witcher Tales [game] but something different. We’re aiming to provide a captivating single-player for players who prefer it over competitive multiplayer Gwent.”
Game Director Vladimir Tortsov had also discussed the project during the Gwent World Masters #3 in December. In a video release, he said, “We want to announce stuff that we’re working on when the time is right. I’m really excited about this project coming together, and I hope you like it as much as I do.”
