Matt Booty, Head of Microsoft Studios, spoke with IGN at PAX West 2022 and expressed his desire to reveal the upcoming Fable reboot.

“Part of my job is giving air cover to the team,” he said. “They don’t want to show stuff early before it’s ready to go, but if there’s one game where that’s kind of flipped around, where every time I see something I say, ‘We should show this’, it’s Fable. Because there’s a lot of cool stuff.”

With that being said, we shouldn’t expect much of anything soon. “The team has made it very clear that I am not going to be able to show anything until it’s ready,” Booty added, laughing

Developed by Playground Games, a new entry in the Fable franchise was officially announced in 2020. The studio has developed every entry in the Forza Horizon franchise, dating back to 2012’s Forza Horizon and, most recently, 2021’s Forza Horizon 5. The game is being developed using the in-house ForzaTech game engine.

The original Fable was released for the Xbox in 2004. Created by Peter Molyneux and developed by Lionhead Studios, the game promised an engine that would adapt and change to every action the player made. While it came short of that revolutionary overpromise, Fable is still an incredibly solid action RPG.

Its sequel, Fable II, was released on the Xbox 360 in 2008 and built upon the foundation of the original. The ideas and concepts were expanded, though still falling short of Molyneux’s initial promises. A third entry in the series came out in 2010 but fell short of the standards and expectations set by its predecessors.

Playground Games’ Fable reboot promises to revitalize the franchise, but we’re still short on details and specifics. The studio has a reputation for not showcasing its upcoming game until a few months before release. For example, Forza Horizon 5 came out in November of 2021. It was first announced and revealed five months prior at E3 2021.

Booty was able to give a small update, thankfully. He addressed the concerns of Playground’s background strictly in racing games, saying they’re bringing the same “craft and dedication that they brought to Forza Horizon.” He added that the studio has “proven that they get it.”

The Fable reboot will release on Xbox Series X|S and PC at a future date.
