Is God of War: Ragnarok a PlayStation 5 Exclusive?

The upcoming God of War: Ragnarok may launch exclusively on PlayStation 5. New leaks suggest the game from Sony Santa Monica may skip the PlayStation 4 entirely.

The news comes from a leaker known as Navtra, who has posited plenty of new information. First, they confirm that Ragnarok isn’t an official title. Revealed at the PlayStation 5 Showcase in summer 2020, the game’s tagline promised “Ragnarok is coming,” but didn’t give a full name. Ragnarok remains an unofficial title, subject to change, as the game’s official title is still under wraps.

More importantly, they believe God of War: Ragnarok will launch only on PS5, with no PS4 version. This falls in line with other Sony exclusive releases like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Returnal, which skipped the previous generation entirely.

The initial reveal at the PS5 Showcase confirmed it would release on the new hardware. However, Sony’s recently asserted that games for PS4 would release for years to come, giving some hope that older systems would still the game. This dampens those hopes — although recent PlayStation exclusives like Spider-Man: Miles Morales launched on both consoles, so anything could change.

God of War: Ragnarok still holds its late 2021 release date, but details are mysteriously low. This lack of information suggests a delay may come soon, as other upcoming PS5 games like Horizon: Forbidden West are equally missing in recent Sony announcements. Recent rumors suggest Ragnarok was internally delayed, with an announcement pending, and the lack of promotion certainly points to this. The game’s developers, Sony Santa Monica, are currently hiring. This points either to upcoming games, or a last-minute push to finish Ragnarok in time.

With Sony aren’t attending E3, they are participating in June’s Summer Game Fest, promising new announcements. It’s likely we’ll hear something about Ragnarok then, whether it be a delay, or a release date. Importantly, they’ll hopefully confirm which platforms it’ll launch on.
