Development for a Max Payne 1&2 project is currently in the conceptual stages. Remedy Entertainment, who developed the first two games in the franchise, will be working on the games “as a single title” for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar Games, who published the second Max Payne title and developed the third title in the franchise, will be acting as a publisher.

“We were thrilled when our long-time friends at Remedy approached us about remaking the original Max Payne games,” said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games “We are massive fans of the work the Remedy team has created over the years, and we can’t wait to play these new versions.”

The Max Payne 1&2 project is slated to be a remake of the first two titles, launching as a single release.

“Max Payne has always held a special place in the hearts of everyone at Remedy, and we know the millions of fans worldwide feel the same,” said Remedy CEO Tero Virtala. “We’re hugely excited to be working with our partners at Rockstar Games once again for the chance to bring the story, action and atmosphere of the original Max Payne games back to players in new ways.”

The Max Payne franchise is lauded by critics and fans, unlike its theatrical release. Releasing over twenty years ago, the franchise established itself as a gripping neo-noir that combined enjoyable bullet time-related gameplay and a narrative that felt like it was from a graphic novel. The titular character, Max Payne, was also celebrated as an enjoyable protagonist fueled by grim motivations.

No release date was mentioned for the Max Payne 1&2 project. In terms of size and scope, development aligns with “a typical Remedy AAA-game production.” As mentioned earlier, things are currently in the concept stage, so don’t expect this for a couple of years minimum.
