Octopath Traveler 2 - Are There Returning Characters?

Octopath Traveler became such a surprise hit that it was practically destined for a sequel. Well, we certainly didn’t have to wait long for the announcement of Octopath Traveler 2. The second entry in the series shares a lot of similarities with the first, particularly with regard to style. But does that mean fans of the first game can expect to see a few familiar faces? Are any characters returning for the sequel?

Are There Returning Characters in Octopath Traveler 2?

Are There Returning Characters in Octopath Traveler 2?

There are no returning characters in Octopath Traveler 2. According to official details, the sequel takes place in an entirely different world, separate from all the people and places in the first game.

This information comes from a post on the official Square Enix blog. The post that says Octopath Traveler 2 “tells a completely new story, set in a different era and a brand new land.” The land is Solistia, a world divided by an ocean in the midst of “a time of trade and industrial revolution.” However, those who played the first game will recall its setting of Orsterra, a single unbroken continent set in a sort of fantasy realm.

With that said, we can’t ignore a more obvious point. Square Enix is well-known for featuring recurring characters and critters throughout games. For instance, the engineer Cid is famous for appearing all throughout the Final Fantasy series. The catch, of course, is that they aren’t all the same person; instead, they’re new takes on a long-running archetype.

As such, it’s possible that we may hear familiar names mentioned in Octopath Traveler 2. Especially if Orsterra and Solistia are somehow linked, we may hear NPCs talking about the events of the previous game. Maybe the story of the first game informs the world of the second. Or, perhaps they are truly, completely unrelated.

What we do know for sure is that none of the main characters in Octopath Traveler are featured in Octopath Traveler 2. If there are any references any previous heroes, chances are good that they’re meant to be Easter eggs.
