It is a point of pride for video games to be as realistic as humanly possible. But there is a line that can be crossed if the developers go too far.
It can be said that Void Interactive, the makers of Ready or Not, went too far. And now that company has lost their game publisher, Team17.
Ready or Not is a first-person shooter that puts players in hostile situations. A team of other users joins the gamer.
There are a variety of different scenarios the team is placed in. And one of these scenarios is a school shooting. While this is always a rough idea, it was made that much worse by the November shooting in Oxford, Michigan.
Still, despite the shooting, it looked like the publisher was still going forward. On December 19th, on the game’s Reddit, it was asked if the school shooting level should go forward. A developer on the game answered, “you better believe it’s gonna.”
Things changed this week. Void Interactive tweeted, “VOID Interactive and Team17 have mutually agreed that Team17 will no longer publish Ready or Not. We are confident that this is the right path for the future of Ready or Not, and we thank Team17 for their partnership and wish them great success with their spectrum of games!”
The thread continued, “We also would like to reassure everyone that we are committed to our vision of Ready or Not as a hardcore tactical shooter. We are continually scanning player feedback and will be rolling out frequent patches/updates over the coming weeks and months.”
