NFT’s have grown in popularity over the last few years. And many gaming companies are looking into ways to incorporate the technology into their games.
The problem is, players aren’t having it. Ubisoft recently put out an NFT program called Quartz. When they made the announcement on YouTube, though, the video was so widely disliked that the company pulled the video down.
Companies, though, are forging ahead. In a recent letter, Square Enix President Yosuke Matsuda declared 2022 to be the year of NFT’s.
Matsuda claimed that 2021 was a “year in which NFTs were met with a great deal of enthusiasm by a rapidly expanding growth base.”
Of course, the gaming President also acknowledged that plenty of players are against NFT’s being incorporated into games. He continued:
“I realize that some people who ‘play to have fun’ and who currently form the majority of players have voiced their reservations toward these new trends, and understandably so. However, I believe that there will be a certain number of people whose motivation is to ‘play to contribute,’ by which I mean to help make the game more exciting.”
Eventually, though, Matsuda acknowledged that the company would continue to push NFT’s on his customer base. He noted that this was “obviously not an ideal solution.” But the gaming President said that he anticipates that there will be an “eventual right-sizing” and “I look for them to become as familiar as dealings in physical goods.”
