Medieval fantasy IPs have been all the rage the last decade or so. That has been especially true for the Witcher, for which Netflix is in production on the 3rd season.
The Witcher is on kind of a similar path to Game of Thrones. GoT began with a book series by George R.R. Martin that was later developed into a hit show. Then Martin helped create the hotly anticipated game, Elden Ring, along with Hidetaka Miyazaki.
Like GoT, the Witcher started as a book series written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. It was first adapted into a game in 2007 by CD Projekt Red. In December of 2019, Netflix released the first series of the Witcher television show.
The show, starring Henry Cavill, has been a hit for the network. A second season was quickly ordered and was released in 2021. Work has now started on season 3.
Fan-site Redanian Intelligence has been collecting Instagram pictures from people who are working on the show. And from the images, it is clear that locations are being checked out.
Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich talked about upcoming plans for the show with Tech Radar back in December. “We’re almost done with the scripting phase, and it’s amazing,” she said. “I’m really thrilled with how the season is shaping up because it’s based on my favorite book in the saga, which is The Time of Contempt.”
Hissrich continued:
“I feel like seasons 1 and 2 have been laying the playing field for everything huge that’s about to happen. But the creative process is now really just starting. We have the scripts, and now we’ll bring directors on, the actors back in, and really start delving in deeper and reflecting back and making sure that it’s the perfect season.”
