Witchfire, a game that was first announced in 2017, is back with a new trailer after very little news in recent years. The game comes from independent studio The Astronauts, who developed The Vanishing of Ethan Carter.

Witchfire, built in Unreal Engine 4, is a beautiful, first-person, roguelike shooter. It’s not often we get to see a first-person shooter that inhabits a dark fantasy world, but Witchfire looks like it will feature dark fantasy elements in spades.

The new trailer shows us flashy spells, powerful enemies, and some badass-looking guns. The gameplay looks to be quick and delightfully frantic. Of course, the game includes several powerful and scary witches.

“In Witchfire, a deadly war rages between powerful witches and the Church. In this alternate reality, witches are very real and very dangerous— but so is the witch hunter. Armed by Vatican sorcerers, players wield an ungodly array of guns and forbidden magic as they combat dark terrors on behalf of their shadowy benefactor.”

In a press release, The Astronauts Creative Director and Co-Founder, Adrian Chmielarz, said, “Witchfire is a dream project for us. After The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, we’re back to familiar shooter territory, but with the benefit of 2022 graphics and design. Now we’re able to bring our dark fantasies to life with spine-tingling realism!”

The indie team is small – containing only nine team members – but the game boasts AAA graphics. The game was first announced at The Game Awards five years ago. Thankfully, players will be able to dive into a “polished” early access version. It will release with a ton of content to explore later this year exclusively on the Epic Games Store.
