Following the weekend’s GTA VI leak, Rockstar Games took the unusual route of directly addressing it.

Normally, gaming studios will not comment on leaks, rumors, or speculations. However, Rockstar Games felt the need to address the situation given the severity and nature of the Grand Theft Auto VI leak.

We recently suffered a network intrusion in which an unauthorized third party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information from our systems, including early development footage for the next Grand Theft Auto,” Rockstar said in an official statement regarding the GTA VI leak.

“At this time, we do not anticipate any disruption to our live game services nor any long-term effect on the development of our ongoing projects.”

“We are extremely disappointed to have any details of our next game shared with you all in this way. Our work on the next Grand Theft Auto game will continue as planned and we remain as committed as ever to delivering an experience to you, our players, that truly exceeds your expectations. We will update everyone again soon and, of course, will properly introduce you to this next game when it is ready. We want to thank everyone for their ongoing support through this situation.”

Rockstar Games confirmed the development of the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto franchise earlier this year. Since then, we’ve learned some details about what to expect in the game, including the fact that it will take place in Vice City and feature a female protagonist. This past weekend’s GTA VI leak seemed to confirm that information.

It’s been over nine years since a proper release in the Grand Theft Auto series. Rockstar has been hard at work for its next installment and is hopeful to reveal the game officially soon. There was a concern that the leak’s inclusion of source code would result in further delays. Rockstar’s statement seems to indicate that won’t be the case.
