Mina the Hollower is the New Title from Yacht Club Games

Mina the Hollower is the long-awaited follow-up to Shovel Knight. Developer Yacht Club Games has launched the game’s Kickstarter alongside the debut trailer.

Like Shovel Knight, Mina the Hollower is a throw-back to older games. Yacht Club styled the game from the 8-bit game Boy Color titles era. It features 60 FPS, action combat, top-down adventure inspired by “Castlevania, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, or even Bloodborne.”

I’m trying to remain partial here, but that description has me beyond excited.

The game’s Kickstarter lists various details regarding the game’s characters, setting, lore, and more. It’s an absolute treasure trove of information to prepare for what to expect when the game releases. While a definite date isn’t set, the estimated release is December 2023. It will be available on Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch based on reward descriptions.

They even include a description of what it means to be a “next-gen Game Boy Color game.”

Game Boy’s screen resolution was a tiny 160×144. Mina’s is 256×144, essentially the same screen real estate, but widescreen. This small resolution (smaller than Shovel Knight!) gives a close-up view at the expense of screen real estate. Each pixel is very impactful!

Yacht Club acknowledges the risks and challenges with making Mina the Hollower and launching a Kickstarter to help fund the game:

“The biggest risk is that Mina the Hollower may take longer than anticipated. We always prioritize quality, even if that means delaying a project a little until it’s ready to meet the world. If that ends up happening, do not fret. We’ve always been transparent about our development process and you’ll be in the loop every step of the way! We look forward to creating something awesome with you.”

Be sure to visit the Kickstarter page for more information, including backer rewards.
