Minecraft‘s 1.19 update introduced the friendly Allay mob into the game. What seems to be a happy ghost can aid the player in finding hard-to-acquire items within a small area. The Allay is useful, so having one to track something down is a good idea. But more is always better, and having an army of Allays to look for items you need can be very helpful. All you need to figure out is, what do Allays eat?
What Do Allays Eat in Minecraft?
Allays are ghost-like creatures, technically, always don’t eat anything. However, they can be duplicated much like every other mob. The upside is that you only need one Allay to make another one.
To duplicate an Allay, you’re going to need three items: a Jukebox, a music disc, and an Amethyst Shard. Jukeboxes are simple to make requiring wood, and a singular diamond. Amethyst Shards can be found underground, inside of amethyst geodes. Lastly, you need a music disc to make the jukebox work. Music discs can be found in all the major structures in the game, aside from the desert temple.
If you want a more challenging, but direct route to obtain one of these discs, there is a way. You’ll have to figure out how to get a skeleton to kill a creeper with an arrow. If you can have a skeleton kill a creeper for you, the creeper will drop a music disc with its normal drops.
Once you have all of these items together, playing a jukebox near an Allay will cause it to dance. Giving the allay an amethyst shard while it’s dancing will cause it to duplicate into two Allays. After this, the Allays will go on a two-minute and 30-second cooldown before this can be done again. This paves the way for exponential allays if you have enough amethyst to satiate them.
In a way, Allays eat amethyst shards, allowing you to create an army of friendly spirits to help you find items out in the wild.
